Allow Me to Introduce Myself

I’m Lauren (a.k.a. “Lola”).“Lola” is  a nickname my dad (a.k.a. “Popsicle”) gave me years ago. I don’t know how or why the name came about but it did and it stuck, my family still uses this name. I was born and raised on Long Island, New York, where my family still resides. I’m the only one who left “the island.”  I’m blessed enough to have three siblings, two sisters-in-laws, one brother-in-law, and seven nieces and nephews, plus two rocking parents, who are nothing short of amazingly supportive. I am a lucky girl.

When My Love Affair With Yoga Began...

It started about 10 years ago, after I ran the Boston Marathon, my body was achy, sore, and tired. No matter what I did, I couldn’t relax it. When I told a friend I wanted to try something other than running, she suggested yoga. She said it would help my sore muscles and would be good for me to do.

She was right.

On a cold Saturday afternoon, we went to Baptiste Power Yoga Boston in Brookline, Massachusetts. It was exciting.

My breath sounded louder than I ever recalled it sounding and it felt so good to move in the way I was moving. I instantly wanted to learn more about the practice. Immediately, I was ready to go back right away. I couldn’t wait.

I continued going to the classes for the next year.  After a year, I enrolled in teacher training.

Yoga has become a part of who I am — for me, it is a way of life.

Yes, I love the physical benefits, but more than that, I enjoy the emotional and mental advantages – it creates a sense of calm, a moving meditation.

There are too many times we find ourselves making quick, instant decisions versus taking a step back, and creating space for ourselves. Yoga allows me to do that.

And, if you give it a chance, it can do the same for you.

Yoga in all facets is accessible, physically, mentally, and emotionally. This practice meets you where you are at, with no expectation, competition, or ego. It is a way of life, and it accepts everybody regardless of gender, weight, flexibility, athleticism, or experience.

I am on the mat about three to four times a week, but I practice off my mat every day. Vinyasa yoga, a sequence of movements in coordination with breath, is my favorite.

When I am not on my mat, I spend my time running, in the great outdoors, exploring and wanderlusting. Laughter and music make my soul happy, especially when combined with friends and family. Oh, and I have been known to cook a mean, healthy, nutritious meal or two.
